Established in 2004, the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet’s outreach program located at Elizabeth Virrick Park has steadily grown since its inception.

Currently, classes are offered in classical ballet and tap one to three times a week, depending on the level.

Information regarding the free classes goes to homeroom teachers of Coconut Grove Elementary, George Washington Carver Elementary, and Frances S. Tucker Elementary. The children receive the information in Creole, Spanish and English, the second week of the new school year. Ballet shoes, tap shoes, leotards and tights are fitted, purchased, and delivered to the children at the site. Dancer’s Loft, a Miami dance supply business, has joined the collaboration, facilitating the purchasing and fitting of the clothes and shoes at a low cost to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.

The dance studio, which is located adjacent to the park gymnasium, is equipped with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a raised wood floor, and five ballet barres. Each year, the students showcase what they have learned over the year to their friends and family members in a performance on the park’s stage located inside the gymnasium.

Success stories of our West Grove outreach include:

One West Grove outreach student was awarded a full scholarship to attend Ransom Everglades lower school. The TAYB helped to facilitate the purchase of school books and uniforms for the child in order for her to attend the program.
