As of Summer 2009 we have a new classroom on site at the Homestead Housing Authority. Since 2004 boys and girls ages 4-13 have participated in the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet’s scholarship program.
A classroom was converted into a dance studio and equipped with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a professionally raised wood floor, and ballet barres. Throughout the year and during the summer teachers incorporate age-appropriate dance enrichment classes which include dance history, vocabulary, and classroom etiquette.
Information regarding the free classes goes out to the community in English, Spanish and Creole at the beginning of the school year.
Twice a year students of all levels showcase what they have learned to friends and family during an in studio performance that is free and open to the public.
Success stories of our South Dade Farm Workers Camp outreach include:
In 2007, with the cooperation of the Concert Association of South Florida, 45 children were able to receive complimentary tickets to attend a performance by Ballet Folklorico de Mexico at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
That same year, complimentary tickets were also given to the children and their families to attend a performance of Cinderella by American Ballet Theater at the Arsht Center. For most of the children and their parents this was the first time they had attended a performance and the first time they have been inside a performing arts center.
