Morningside Elementary Outreach
6620 NE 5th Avenue

The oldest of our outreach programs, the Morningside ballet program has proven to be very successful.

The elementary level satellite program was set up in 2002, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade School system, at Morningside Elementary School at 6620 NE 5th Avenue.

Information regarding the free classes goes home with the children in Creole, Spanish and English, the second week of the new school year. Ballet shoes, tap shoes, leotards and tights are fitted, purchased, and delivered to the children. Dancer’s Loft, a Miami dance supply business, has joined the collaboration, facilitating the purchasing and fitting of the clothes and shoes at a low cost to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.

Within a portable on Morningside Elementary school grounds the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet, with the support of its sponsors, has built out the dance studio with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a raised wood floor, ballet barres, and costumes and props for the dance classes. Local lumber and hardware business Shell Lumber assisted the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet with the purchase of needed supplies to build out the raised wood floor. As a result, we have been able to incorporate pointe classes into the program!

Many of the children speak English as their second language. As a result, many are behind in their reading skills. A small library was been started in the ballet room for the students to use while they are waiting for their class. Books may also be borrowed and taken home. All books are used and have been donated. A student from Palmer Trinity School heard about the library and began a book drive, as part of her senior project, including building shelves for the books!

Success stories of our Morningside outreach include:

Three Morningside outreach students auditioned for high school magnet programs. Two were accepted into New World School of the Arts and one was accepted into Michael Kropp Senior High. Both are “A” schools. Since the program’s inception 10 Morningside outreach students have participated in our annual performance of “The Nutcracker” in collaboration with New World School of the Arts and, as a result, have been on stage with 200 other cast members performing for a total audience of 10,000 during the four performances.
